Growth can only be understood if it is recorded.

Without clear records, it’s impossible to know how a face is developing—or whether it’s changing for better or worse.

Measure Facial Growth Over Time!

Dr Mike Mew encourages parents and clinicians to measure facial growth over time, especially in children. Taking regular photographs provides an invaluable record that helps detect changes early, long before problems become obvious.

The principle is simple: if you don’t know where you’ve been, you can’t know where you’re going.

The evidence suggests that the environment plays a major role in shaping the face.

As such, documenting growth allows both professionals and parents to monitor the influence of posture, breathing, and lifestyle factors. It also provides reassurance that exercises and treatments are supporting, not hindering, natural development.

To achieve consistent, useful 2D images, follow a few simple guidelines:

  • Use a telephoto lens (or zoom) to minimise distortion.

  • Take images from at least 3 metres, ideally 5 metres away.

  • Use consistent artificial lighting—sunlight changes hour by hour.

  • Record front, 3/4 and side profiles at the same height each time.artificial lighting—sunlight changes hour by hour.

3D imaging offers even more precision

However, 3D superimposition standards are still developing, while there are currently tried-and-tested methods of comparing 2D records. Ideally take 3D as well to future proof your records, and for the best possible interpretation.

Some Records Can be Made By Patients Themselves

In time, these measurements may form a vital part of preventive orthodontic care. For now, anyone concerned about their child’s growth—or considering treatment—should take the initiative to capture independent, accurate records.

We have some suggested equipment and simple guides for taking high-quality images available on this site’s shop. By recording growth carefully, families can protect their children’s health and contribute valuable information to a new, more scientific understanding of how their facial development.
